Biography

I joined the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology Vienna in 2016, where I currently hold a Scientist position in the ICT Security domain. Between 2011 and 2015 I was Senior Researcher with the Telecommunications Research Center Vienna, working in the Communication Networks domain. Between 2003 and 2012 I held Research and Teaching Assistant positions at the Universidad de la República (UdelaR) in Montevideo, Uruguay, working in the core of the ARTES research group – Telecommunications Department, Electrical Engineering Institute.

I received an Electrical Engineering degree from the Engineering Faculty (FING) of UdelaR in 2005, working in the field of modeling and automatic assessment of Quality of Experience in multimedia networks. In 2010 I received a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Télécom Bretagne (ex. ENST Bretagne) in France and a Ph.D. in Electrial Engineering from Universidad de la República (UdelaR) in Uruguay (granted in 2013), working in network anomaly detection and traffic analysis. After my Ph.D., I joined the french LAAS-CNRS research lab in Toulouse as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, where I worked in machine learning techniques for network traffic monitoring and analysis.

During the past 10 years I have been working as project manager, technical work leader and researcher in multiple national and international projects, including both research and commercial projects. I am currently project leader of the Austrian WWTF BigDAMA project and the EU H2020 Mobi-QoE project (part of the EU H2020 MONROE project). Before I was work package leader at the EU FP7 mPlane project (large scale traffic measurements and intelligent analysis) and the COMET ACE project series.

I have published more than 100 Networking research papers in major international conferences and journals (ACM PER, IEEE Network, IEEE TNSM, Computer Networks, CoNEXT, SIGCOMM, INFOCOM, IFIP Networking, IFIP Performance, ITC, TMA), I have received 8 best paper and best workshop awards (IEEE, IFIP, ACM, ITC, EuroNGI European Network of Excellence), I have supervised 2 successfully concluded PhD students, and I have participated as teaching assistant in different undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate courses.

My main research interests include machine-learning and data mining based approaches for Networking, big data analytics and platforms, Internet network measurements, network security and anomaly detection, as well as QoE modeling, assessment and monitoring.
